Is ESPN biased against MLS & US National soccer?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009
warren r asked:

During mid summer, sports in the USA are at its weakest. No football, no basketball, no hockey….all you see on TV is tons and tons of baseball.

But many overlook that US soccer is here in addition to baseball. The soccer Gold Cup between USA and Mexico beat the NHL Finals and attracted attracted 41 % more television households in the United States than the Stanley Cup finals clincher . Heck it wasn’t even posted on standard TV, but on the Fox Soccer Channel and Univision spanish channel. It is a disgrace that American TV…especially ESPN didn’t even show our national soccer team come back and beat Mexico in a dramatic fashion. They are now ranked 11th in the world too.

ESPN could have showed this game and reached a higher mainstream audience. The ratings were very good considering how very niche both channel stations are. But instead ESPN 1 & 2 showed poker, billiards, and baseball. Neither bothered showing the game!

Anyone else thinks the same?

A Guide to Billiard Tables and Cues

Monday, April 20th, 2009
April Kerr asked:

Billiard or pool is probably the most popular indoor game that is often played in the clubs and offices. As a matter of fact this game has gained huge popularity all over the world and this is the reason why you will find tournaments and competitions of billiard taking place everywhere. A billiard table and cue are the two indispensable tools for a game of billiard. Now the quality of these two instruments has huge impact on the player’s performance. So these two things have to the best of the lot.

Buying a Billiard Table

It is not at all an easy job to buy a billiard table. There are quite a few factors that you need to take care of in order to make sure that you are picking up the best piece. The important facts about a billiard table are its size, shape and price. Moreover you need to purchase a table that will fit the place where you keep it. If you are going to purchase the table for using it at home then make sure that you have a sufficiently spacious room to accommodate the table. It also matters a lot whether you are going to place the table at a corner of the room or in the centre.

The door size of the room needs to be wide enough to let the table get into it. There are various places from where you can buy a billiard table. Often you get to see advertisements in the newspapers where they want to sell used or new tables. If you have enough money to spend fro your hobby of Billiard then the best option is to go for a new one. If at all there is budget constraint then a used one in a good condition is not bad at all.

How to Buy a Billiard Cue and Balls?

The billiard cues and the balls are as essential as the table is. As a matter of fact if the cues and the balls are of cheaper quality then the chances of the games getting spoiled is very high. All the billiard players have the same opinion that the balls and the cues should be perfect for a good game. Now you need to take care of some features while buying the cues for your personal collection.

First of all hold the cues in hand and try out some shots with it just to make sure that you are getting the right feel about them. If you are a seasoned player of billiard then you will understand the quality from the first touch. Then you need to know if the sticks are perfectly straight or not. If at all they are defective in any ways then the shots will never be perfect.

So if you want to play billiards and be the best player you can, always choose your billiard table and cues carefully.

Enjoy Pool and Billiards

Sunday, April 19th, 2009
alex desouza asked:

Although they look like same but there are some differneces between two games. Both games are interesting to play but are addictive a lot.Yes as addictive as gambling. So here I am giving you some differences by which you can sort out these two games .

Historically the umbrella term for the sport as a whole was billiards. While that familiar name is still employed variably as a generic name for all games, the word’s usage has splintered into more inclusive competing meanings among certain groups and geographic regions. For example, in the United Kingdom, billiards refers exclusively to English Billiards, while in the United States it is sometimes used to refer only to carom games and by a minority to eight-ball (being the only cue game known to many players).

In our time, the two can easily be exchanged and mean the same thing. When people refer to one, it is assumed the other is also being included. On the technical side, there is a difference. Billiards is played with smaller balls. In billiards, only three balls are used white, yellow and red and both the white and the yellow ball can act as the strikers. Billiards is basically pool without pockets. Usually the cloth on a billiards table is much faster. The object in billiards (3 cushion billiards) is to hit the object ball then go three rails and hit the other ball, or hit 3 rails and hit both object balls with the cue ball (these are called caroms).

Most of us are familiar with pool and pool tables. Some of us may be aware of the different variations of the pool game, a few being eight-ball, nine-ball and cut throat. As stated above, billiards is played on a table with no pockets. We know that pool tables are constructed with 6 pockets. The game is played with two sets of balls, each containing seven balls, with one set being solid colored and the other striped. The two sets are combined into one set and then completed by a black eight ball. This is a standard set of pool balls, and can be broken up to play different versions of the game.

Though there are vast differences between the two games, they are commonly grouped as one and refered to as cue sports. If someone says they’re going to shoot a game of billiards, we all know what they are referring to in general. It all depends on what style of the game you would like to play. Billiards is a form of pool. So perhaps in future reference, it should all be covered by using the term pool, unless you are actually playing by billiards rules and regulations.

I’m going to ask her out. Is this email fine?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009
NEEDHELP! asked:

Ok, before anyone says “hey wuss meet her in person!” yada blah:

I met her in December 2008, and we’ve emailed each other since. We texted a few times to, but then my phone service had to be disconnectd.

We’re to meet this month, for the first time since we first met. I’m sending her a email asking her out to the movies/dinner, is the follow alright? (She’s busy this week, her college work ends in about 2 weeks, then we go):

BTW: I AM NOT SHY or anything; so don’t say that. I just didn’t want to freak her out before, so I waited this long(maybe too long lol)

POST SUGGESTIONS/EDITS that I should make:

————–
Subj: Hey (omitted for privacy); we’ve been talking for quite a while now.

So I thought, you know, we meet up, catch up and so.

Want to go watch a movie with me and then have some coffee or dinner to catch up? Or hey, I can show you to billiards/snooker(the pool table game)>

What’d you say?

Of course, it’s all after you’re done with college(May 18).

There’s a few very good movies coming out the next two weeks(around May 20). Like “Drag me to Hell” (it’s KIND of a horror movie) or Angels and Demons.

What kinds of movies you like? You know, so you can choose.

I hope I’m not bothering with your studies(dont worry, it’as just as bad with me haha) but don’t forget to get back to me once you’re free Snuggles!
@celosa :

The date May 18, is the date she gave me before when I asked her if she wants to meet up(she said Sure! But after may 18 because the college exams).

I agree with the naming the movies.

But Snuggles, is the nickname I gave her since December. And she said she loves it.
EDITTED VERSION:

So I thought, you know, we meet up, catch up and so.

You know, grab some coffee, go to the movies and fight down a dinner to catch up. Or hey, I can also show you to billiards/snooker(the pool table game)>

What kinds of movies you like? You know, so you can choose.

I hope I’m not bothering with your studies(dont worry, it’as just as bad with me haha) but don’t forget to get back to me once you’re free Snuggles!

I don’t understand what accessories I need to buy for the Wii in order to be able to play multiplayer. I get that I should buy an additional Wii Remote Controller, and Wii Nunchuk Controller. Do I need to buy the Wii Classic Controller at all? Also, do I need to buy a memory card (if so, would 1GB be enough to start)?

Last thing — would $450.00 be a reasonable price if all of these things are included?

Billiard Games: Poker Pocket and Six Ball

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009
George Wood asked:

Poker Pocket: it combines the skill and talent of billiards with the intrigue and skill of poker. If the total ball number is 15 on the billiards table, then poker pocket is played with one more ball than extra which totals. Each four balls are to be labeled with a J for Jack, another four with K for King, A for Ace, and the last four ones with Q for queen. The objective is simple, played by maximum three opponents, it is required that you make a better poker hand for yourself than your opponents.

Each player may pocket up to five balls for one inning or frame and after doing so is done with his or her hand of poker. Any legally pocketed balls are given credit to the player doing the opening break, and after that it continues until the player has pocketed five balls. Just like in the popular card game in that the best hand is four of a kind, then its a full house, three of a kind, two pairs, a straight, or a simple basic pare, here, the object is to have the best hand.

Six ball: is much like the object of rotation in that every legal shot, and it must first contact the lowest numbered ball on the table before it pockets any other ball. As long as the six ball is placed directly in the middle, the rack is simply just six balls in any random order. When scoring is concerned, the balls have absolutely no point value, and the only object of the game is to pocket the number six ball.

The game is over and a new game must be started if in the opening shot, the player makes contact with the one ball first and then contacts the six ball. As long as the player legally pockets the ball, the shooter can stay at the table, similar to other games of rotation. To players looking for a quick and easy game without the concern of the game dragging on four hours, this game is very attractive.

So, the next time you come out of your local pool hall or complete your billiards tournament inside the old bowling alley, do not forget the long history of billiards. Do not forget that the game you already won has added to the well-known history of billiards, or that the contest you just lost was lost long ago by much much more masterly people than you. Presidents and Kings have lost and won at billiards just like you or me, although they likely did not drown their pity in a cheap beer with a big basket of mozzarella sticks.
